Kandidatoi

   Cavalry troop of imperial bodyguards, like the scholae palatinae and the exkoubitoi (qq.v.). Kandidatoi were more an ornamental guard, recognizable on ceremonial occasions by the white trappings they wore over gilded armor. During the reign of Justin I, the future Justinian I (qq.v.) was a kandidatos.
